Know The Cold Weather Home Hazards

With cold weather coming on, homeowners are firing up furnaces, space heaters and fireplaces that may not have been used for some time. Stoves are also used more often in winter months. Keep your family safe from fire and carbon monoxide hazards with the following tips for warming your home on those cold fall nights.

1. Get Your Furnace Cleaned

  • Have your furnace cleaned and inspected before turning it on. Vents can become blocked, dirt can accumulate and electronics can fail. Regular servicing will ensure that your unit is properly vented and running efficiently.

2. Get Your Chimney Cleaned

  • Have your chimney cleaned and inspected before starting a fire in it and never leave a fire unattended. Close glass doors or screens to keep sparks from escaping and igniting a fire.

3. Don’t Use Space Heaters

  • Avoid using space heaters, and if you do, allow at least three feet of clearance around them. Remove any combustible material such as paper and fabric from the area, as well as items on the floor that could trip people passing close to your heater.

4. Never Heat Using A Stove

  • Never use a stove or oven to heat your house. If your heating breaks down or you need help with your heating bills, contact your utility company for help.

5. Don’t Run Your Car Indoors

  • Don’t run your car inside the garage, even for short periods.

6. Check Your Smoke and CO Detectors

  • Test your smoke detectors and CO alarms to make sure they’re operating. Change the batteries in spring and fall to ensure they will work when you need them.
